Bisi Bele Huli Anna

Preparation Time: 20 mins
Cooking Time: 30 mins
Makes 4 servings
Ingredients
  • 1 cup toovar (arhar) dal (washed)
  • 1 cup raw rice (chawal) , washed
  • 1/4 cup chopped french beans
  • 1/4 cup chopped carrots
  • 1/2 cup potato cubes
  • 1/2 cup capsicum cubes
  • 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
  • 3 curry leaves (kadi patta)
  • 2 tbsp tamarind (imli) pulp
  • 2 tsp oil
  • salt to taste
For The Powdered Masala
  • 2 tbsp chana dal (split bengal gram)
  • 2 tbsp urad dal (split black lentils)
  • 25 mm (1") piece cinnamon (dalchini)
  • 1/2 dry coconut (kopra)
  • 8 whole dry kashmiri red chillies
  • 3 tbsp coriander (dhania) seeds
  • 1 tbsp oil
Method
  1. Boil the vegetables and keep aside.
  2. Boil 5 cups of water in a heavy-bottomed pan, add the oil, turmeric powder, toovar dal and salt and cook for 5 to 6 minutes.
  3. Add the rice, cover and cook over medium flame for 20 minutes, till the rice and dal are cooked.
For the powdered masala
  1. Heat the oil and roast all the ingredients except the coconut, blend in a blender to a fine powder.
  2. Powder the coconut separately.
How to proceed
  1. When the rice and dal is cooked, add the boiled vegetables, powdered masala, curry leaves, tamarind pulp, salt and 2 cups of water, mix gently and cook on a slow flame for further 5 minutes.
  2. When the rice is cooked, add the boiled vegetables, powdered masala, curry leaves, tamarind pulp and salt, mix gently and cook for further 5 minutes.
  3. Serve hot with ghee.
