- 1 cup toovar (arhar) dal (washed)
- 1 cup raw rice (chawal) , washed
- 1/4 cup chopped french beans
- 1/4 cup chopped carrots
- 1/2 cup potato cubes
- 1/2 cup capsicum cubes
- 1/2 tsp turmeric powder (haldi)
- 3 curry leaves (kadi patta)
- 2 tbsp tamarind (imli) pulp
- 2 tsp oil
- salt to taste
- 2 tbsp chana dal (split bengal gram)
- 2 tbsp urad dal (split black lentils)
- 25 mm (1") piece cinnamon (dalchini)
- 1/2 dry coconut (kopra)
- 8 whole dry kashmiri red chillies
- 3 tbsp coriander (dhania) seeds
- 1 tbsp oil
- Boil the vegetables and keep aside.
- Boil 5 cups of water in a heavy-bottomed pan, add the oil, turmeric powder, toovar dal and salt and cook for 5 to 6 minutes.
- Add the rice, cover and cook over medium flame for 20 minutes, till the rice and dal are cooked.
- Heat the oil and roast all the ingredients except the coconut, blend in a blender to a fine powder.
- Powder the coconut separately.
- When the rice and dal is cooked, add the boiled vegetables, powdered masala, curry leaves, tamarind pulp, salt and 2 cups of water, mix gently and cook on a slow flame for further 5 minutes.
- When the rice is cooked, add the boiled vegetables, powdered masala, curry leaves, tamarind pulp and salt, mix gently and cook for further 5 minutes.
- Serve hot with ghee.
